Breadcrumbs: Piecing Together the Retirement Living Industry by Amy Friesen is an excellent and sensitively written book on the challenges of dealing with the many complications of eldercare issues. Written from the perspective of an observing consultant who works closely with issues that arise when their parents or spouses need additional healthcare, it includes many examples of case studies that exemplify the personal decision-making challenges often required. The book starts with the challenges of caregiving and possible burnout while showing how often we forget there are many transferrable skills from other situations we can utilize to become a stronger caregiver. Part 1: New and Unfamiliar Territory focuses on the importance of proper planning, introduces us to the terminology involved, the important conversations necessary to have between the family and the loved one needing assistance, and red flags to consider when looking at what actions need to be taken. Part 2 involves pre-planning.
These chapters discuss the continuum of long-term care from home care to assisted living to long-term care facilities. The chapters on communication and dealing with inter-family conflict are extremely important as well as the strategies Amy recommends in dealing with families affected by dementia. It is also important to consider when two spouses are living together, one with dementia and one with other health issues—the book addresses this well, especially in dealing with inter-family communication. Amy Friesen provides an excellent book offering information and discussing the various family issues that come up with eldercare health. Breadcrumbs: Piecing Together the Retirement Living Industry is an important resource for families having to make decisions about their loved ones experiencing physical and/or health issues. I highly recommend this book for those readers as well as anyone who wants to educate themself for the future on these issues. I found the book to be excellent overall, both professionally and personally.
