Monster Mountain by Stacey Bartlett is a middle-grade adventure that blends folklore, fantasy, and the charm of childhood friendships. Set against the backdrop of Western North Carolina's rich legends, the story follows Nicky, her brother Ben, and her online best friend Winnie as they embark on a summer vacation that quickly turns into an extraordinary journey through a magical portal into another world. The characters are endearing, especially Nicky, whose love for gaming and her protective nature shine throughout the story. Winnie’s intelligence and Ben’s resourcefulness add depth to the trio, creating a compelling dynamic. Their bond is tested as they face mythical creatures like Sawmouths, Wampus Cats, and Mountain Trolls, but their courage and teamwork never waver.

The author skillfully incorporates elements of North Carolina folklore, such as the Boojum and the Moon-Eyed People, weaving them into the narrative magically. Themes of bravery, friendship, and self-acceptance are central to the story. The characters learn to embrace their unique qualities, turning perceived weaknesses into strengths. This message is particularly empowering for young readers who may struggle with self-confidence or bullying. While the story is packed with action and suspense, it also has moments of humor and heartwarming interactions, especially between Nicky and her family. The ending ties everything together beautifully. Monster Mountain is a perfect blend of adventure and heart, making it an excellent choice for middle-grade readers who enjoy fantasy and stories about friendship. Stacey Bartlett's tale is entertaining and inspiring, reminding readers that even in the face of extraordinary challenges, love and courage can prevail.
