Matt Wright’s Breaking Colossus: Stars Reach, Book One is an exciting, fast-paced, character-driven space opera. The story begins on the planet Telam. Roth Soleis is 20, the son of Queen Alora Soleis and the legendary warrior Grey Soleis. Roth was only a few days old when his father left Telam to fight in the war by the Ascendancy against the Dominion Constellar. There has been no news from Grey in the twenty years that have elapsed. Roth joins the military as an Intelligence Officer. When his father is reported to be missing in action, Roth leaves Telam, determined to find him. His journey across galaxies takes him from one planet to another, planets where his father was reported to have fought death-defying battles against the Dominion Constellar. The action, pace, and tension build as the story twists and turns to the very end.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Matt Wright’s Breaking Colossus for its complex characters and richly imagined world-building of intergalactic political warfare. I particularly liked the character development of Roth Soleis as he follows the trail his father left across galaxies, listening to the stories of people who remember Grey Soleis. The story gained a great deal of depth as Roth tries to understand how and why Grey fought for the Ascendancy and finds himself struggling with his own inner journey, fraught with conflicting thoughts and emotions about political warfare and the loss of countless millions of lives and the destruction of entire planets. The character of Grey Soleis sprang to life through Roth’s space odyssey, and the story turned into a page-turner. Was Grey Soleis still alive? I also liked how Queen Alora Soleis’ character emerges through her memories of her husband, Grey, and as the planet Telam experiences violent political struggles. The nanotechnology woven into the story added a fantastic dimension to the plot. Breaking Colossus is a terrific read with compelling characters in a story of a family torn apart, rebellion, resilience, betrayal, and loyalty.
