Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion by Michael Phillip Cash is a compelling novel that will undoubtedly appeal to fans of horror, and readers who enjoy books that give them goosebumps. Now jobless, only one thing occupies Seth’s mind — stay close to his pregnant wife, Lara, and use his new digital camcorder to document every journey with the baby. But the news that a swarm of cicadas (Brood X) could invade the entire Northwest doesn’t seem to bother him much, until they surface on his doorstep. With the power grid cut and phone lines not functioning, with food destroyed and no water supply, Seth and Lara must stand their ground against an attack of the horrifying kind as Brood X fights to invade his home and deposit their eggs there. But what can Seth and his wife do against their resilient and vicious force?
I am not a big fan of horror, but Michael Phillip Cash’s writing and storytelling skills can’t just be ignored. The author knows how to create action-packed scenes, following a narrative style that is unique and that directly involves the reader. The characters are strong and readers will watch with interest as the couple transforms from a leisurely demeanor to people fighting to survive an insane invasion. Fast-paced and written for readers to have one hand on the book and the other gripping something, the tension builds up rapidly from one riveting page to the next. Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion is your adrenaline pump for the low days. Excellent!
