Brunt and Eggbert Happen Upon a Wreck! by Jeff Dorrill is a playful picture book that captures the gentle chaos of welcoming someone new into a settled life. Brunt and Eggbert share an enviable contentment, built on shared routines, creative projects, and the quiet joy of companionship. Eggbert’s impatience and desire to restore order are understandable, while Brunt’s curiosity and openness offer a counterpoint rooted in empathy. Wreck is an inspired creation: exuberant, impulsive, and unapologetically messy. Rather than treating her behavior as something to be fixed, the narrative invites readers to see her actions as expressions of youth, displacement, and untapped affection. This framing explores kindness and understanding without heavy-handed lessons, trusting young readers to grasp the emotional stakes through character interaction.
Jeff Dorrill’s text balances humor and tenderness with a light touch. The language flows smoothly when read aloud, making it well-suited to shared story time. Repetition and rhythm reinforce the sense of routine that Brunt and Eggbert enjoy, which in turn heightens the impact of Wreck’s arrival. The pacing moves comfortably, giving children time to absorb each new mishap while building anticipation for how the trio will ultimately find their footing together. The artwork by Ángeles Peinador is expressive, conveying emotions clearly, allowing even very young readers to follow the story’s emotional arc. Brunt and Eggbert Happen Upon a Wreck! offers an engaging look at how families and friendships can grow in unexpected ways. With humor, warmth, and memorable characters, it encourages conversations about patience, acceptance, and making room for others.
