Brutus Makes A Mask is written and illustrated by Amy Marie. When a virus causes his family to have to stay home and quarantine, Brutus is frightened by the way things change. Normally, this happy-go-lucky Chihuahua was ready to sing a song that would make a problem just disappear, but it wasn’t working this time. He hid and watched his humans and the new things they did to keep themselves from getting sick. The idea of making a mask struck him, and he began to create the perfect one for him to wear. A hero’s mask and scuba gear wouldn’t quite do the trick, so what was a Chihuahua to do? Would he get the perfect shape and size for a mask that would protect him?

Brutus Makes A Mask by Amy Marie is an adorable children’s story that covers the fear and sadness that accompany being stuck in the house under quarantine. The characters easily relay the concerns that everyone, including children, felt during the pandemic. I absolutely love how Brutus didn’t give up after not getting his mask right the first time around. This sends a positive message to kids about perseverance in a way that they can easily understand. The illustrations are colorful and will keep kids entertained and flipping pages as they enjoy the story that goes with them. I recommend Brutus Makes A Mask to young children who are of a learning age and those who enjoy a sweet story that delivers an important life lesson. I look forward to reading more work from this talented author.
