Building Towers by Rolling Dice is a memoir disguised as fiction by Logan Rosenstein detailing the personal journey of a young man named Tyler as he faces anxiety and depression and how he dealt with it. Growing up is a fragile and unsettling period in one’s life as one goes through mental, physical, and emotional changes. We take an up-close and personal look at this fragile stage by getting into Tyler’s mindset and how he deals with the attitudes that accompany family, school, and peer pressure. Rosenstein discloses that this work was written to provide a connection with a loved one facing similar struggles. The fictional Tyler is a mirror reflection of the author himself. Other than depression, he also touches on other social dilemmas like suicide, bullying, and gender discrimination. How Rosenstein manages to address these sensitive issues with sharp humor makes for additional incentive to pick up this novel.
Dialogue moves the plot as we find characters often engaging in conversations. It serves as a cue when characters make decisions, argue, sympathize, reconcile, and concede. Human speech is a common source of tension and conflict. At times it is didactic when information is shared between characters in a manner that serves as an indirect address to the reader. It takes extra mileage as a transcript on a psychotherapy session is provided that explores intervention and the doctor-patient relationship. Building Towers by Rolling Dice is premised on the fact that no one is immune to mental illness. With so many expectations for people to meet in this cruel, demanding world, anyone can find a deep connection to what this book has to say.
