Beach Camper Caper by Katlee Davis starts with 14-year-old Mandy Mardell trying to survive a bummer of a summer at a California campground. She is already brooding over failing cheerleader tryouts when things get worse. Someone sneaks into her tent, steals her grandmother’s precious childhood scrapbook, and leaves behind a strange coded note in its place. To get it back, Mandy has to team up with her cousin, Kyle, and his two buddies, even though she is desperately trying to hide how much of a math nerd she actually is. Together, they end up running all over the park, dodging the rules and strict camp hosts. Will Mandy ever manage to outsmart whoever is really behind this mess and rescue her family's heirloom before her parents find out and pack her up for home?

Beach Camper Caper by Katlee Davis is a young adult mystery that is a delightful time capsule, proving that a story can be intellectually stimulating while wrapping the reader in total comfort. What really impressed me was how seamlessly the author transforms abstract math puzzles into the actual heartbeat of the adventure. It felt very refreshing to watch Mandy’s mathematical intuition become her greatest superpower instead of a social liability. Watching the four teenagers grow closer was easily my favorite part. Their quick-witted banter and deepening bond felt real for teens crossing that strange fourteen-year-old threshold. The ocean scenery is incredibly realistic, constantly teasing you with breezy air and smoky bonfire smells. The story maintained great pacing, keeping me eagerly reading to see how the book would end. It is a lovely, feel-good, throwback read that honors intelligent youngsters. I recommend it to anyone craving a smart, sun-soaked mystery or younger readers looking for a puzzle-filled escape with a lot of heart. Recommended.

Delivering adventure and laugh-out-loud humor, Katlee Davis’ Beach Camper Caper follows the adventures of fourteen-year-old Mandy Mardell, whose Trixton Beach vacation becomes more exciting when she discovers that her grandmother’s irreplaceable scrapbook is missing from her tent. Mandy is desperate to find the scrapbook as she needs it for her secret essay contest entry. She inadvertently discovers a ransom note in binary computer code, and it offers clues on finding the missing scrapbook. She has thirty-six hours to locate the scrapbook and prepare her presentation, so she enlists the help of her cousin, Kyle, and his friends to decode the clues buried across the campsites. They must dodge the overzealous camp host and expose the thief.

A wonderfully crafted book for young readers, Beach Camper Caper begins as an adventure and evolves into a well-grounded story of self-discovery. I loved the quirky narrative voice that brilliantly reflects Mandy’s worldview. She is nerdy and struggles with insecurities about her coding and Math-O-Lete skills. Yet she is a lovable character who makes readers laugh at her clumsiness and how seriously she can take things. The book examines how working together can help teenagers build and deepen relationships. Through Mandy's interactions with the culprit, the author conveys the message that desperation can corrupt ambition. Katlee Davis ingeniously blends classic camping capers with 1990s computer science to deliver an intriguing story that makes readers engage with Boolean logic.

Beach Camper Caper by Katlee Davis is a fun mystery story set in 1999. Mandy Mardell is 14 and looking forward to a camping holiday at the beach, but when her gran’s childhood scrapbook disappears from her tent, it sets off a strange chain of events. Whoever took the book left a ransom note filled with coded clues, so Mandy, her cousin Kyle, and his friends set off to find it. Mandy is talented at logic puzzles and code-breaking, so they follow the clues around the campground, dodging park rangers and quirky campers. Mandy comes under suspicion as a possible suspect, and it’s down to her to face some home truths while trying to find the real thief before their holiday is over. Can Mandy recover the treasured scrapbook?

Beach Camper Caper by Katlee Davis was a joy to read, an entertaining and lighthearted mystery with plenty of action and humor. If you enjoyed beach camping as a kid, this story will take you straight back to your childhood. The characters are easy to like, especially the smart, capable Mandy, and the other characters are an excellent supporting cast, bringing plenty of energy and humor. This is the perfect book for people who love solving puzzles, as it includes lots of STEM-inspired clues and coded puzzles, and these add an extra dimension, helping readers feel even more involved in the story. It’s quite a fast-moving plot, and the twist at the end was a real surprise. Throughout, there are themes of friendship, building self-confidence, working together, and family, making it an engaging story that will suit readers of all ages, not just teens or tweens.

In Katlee Davis’s Beach Camper Caper, at Trixton Beach Campground, Mandy Mardell wants one last quiet vacation before high school, but her secret essay-contest plan changes when Grandma Elyse’s old beach scrapbook vanishes from her tent. The scrapbook matters because Mandy used it to write a county-finalist essay that could bring a band concert to her school. In its place, Mandy finds an old photograph marked with coded directions, sending her from campsite to campsite as each buried message requires computer logic to read. To get the scrapbook back before Grandma Elyse arrives, Mandy must accept help from Sam, a boy who already knows enough to expose what she has tried to hide. Each clue moves Mandy closer to the missing book as the campground’s past points toward the unknown thief.

Katlee Davis’s Beach Camper Caper has the welcoming pull of a read-aloud mystery, and the author amplifies this through Mandy Mardell’s beachside investigation, where computer-coded ransom notes turn a family keepsake into the center of the book’s suspense. Davis makes Mandy memorable by tying each binary clue to a choice that tests her honesty with her friends, her family, and even herself. The best scenes show the author's gift for character detail: Mr. Barpet’s kindness after Mandy’s curfew trouble, Sedona’s song for her grandmother, and Sam’s loyal response to Mandy’s secret all give the mystery real feeling. Davis also gives Trixton Beach a full community life, from Site 71’s hair-styling campsite to Site 83’s motorhome cookbook workspace. Davis writes for young readers with warmth, humor, and heart. Readers who enjoy beach mysteries with coded clues should pick up this book.

Beach Camper Caper by Katlee Davis uses coded clues in a fun-filled mystery. Mandy Mardell never expected her family’s vacation to the beach to take a hilariously chaotic turn, nor did she think she’d receive a ransom note after discovering a scrapbook had been snatched. The book contains her grandma’s precious childhood camping memories. Mandy will do anything to get it back, but it won’t be that easy, as her only form of help is her cousin and his friends. Keeping her own scrapbook secrets hidden, she and her sleuthing team search for the missing scrapbook while Mandy uses her brainiac abilities to decipher codes. But the more she uncovers, the more the mystery seems to turn on her, pushing her to be truthful about her own secrets.

This mystery is ideal for middle-schoolers, but with a playful tone that maintains the wonder associated with younger chapter books. Her code-cracking is a necessary part of what solves the mystery, which helps her face her insecurity about her brainiac side. This helps Mandy accept her love of computers and numbers, showing young girls that it’s okay to enjoy STEM. Katlee Davis incorporates these elements into a whimsical caper. There’s a lovely childlike humor and imagination in the mystery. The setting is an important part of the plot. The camping, swimming, and family moments give the book a nostalgic feeling, which pairs well with the time period. This creates a backdrop for Mandy and her friends to investigate while dodging quirky campers and campground rules to embark on a delightful treasure hunt. The style is reminiscent of classic mysteries such as Trixie Belden or the Hardy Boys. There’s a subtle wackiness to the world that Davis has crafted that feels like you’re stepping back in time and enjoying the adventure with Mandy. A feel-good mystery that is delightful and lighthearted, Beach Camper Caper takes you on a great adventure.
