Buried Secrets: Where It All Begins by S.F. Baumgartner is a thrilling drama that follows Dylan Roche, a grieving son who discovers that he has a wealthy family living in Florida and is the heir to a massive empire. Dylan struggles to understand what could have frightened his mother enough to abandon her lavish life for the meager earnings of a waitress and become a struggling single mother. Going to Florida presents Dylan with an opportunity to reconnect with his only surviving family member and uncover the truth about his mother’s past. However, things are not as they seem. Despite being welcomed by his grandmother, Dylan feels a presence lurking in the shadows, watching his every move, and when he begins receiving threatening notes, he realizes his life is in danger. Hidden doorways, birth secrets, and an international criminal enterprise await his discovery.
Buried Secrets: Where It All Begins is the first book in the Mirror Estate series. It introduces readers to a captivating array of characters and an estate that sets the stage for an engaging blend of suspense and mystery. S.F. Baumgartner’s storytelling keeps readers on the edge of their seats, eager to find out what happens next. The narrative includes flashbacks from Dylan’s parents’ past, offering clues to his mother’s actions and choices. As the plot unfolds, it becomes increasingly convoluted. I was shocked by each revelation, and the final confrontation skillfully connected all the dots while still leaving room for more questions to be answered in future installments. Dylan is a compelling character who evokes empathy and caution. His motives are noble, yet his bloodline suggests a sinister trait that may emerge, adding complexity to his character and making him a fascinating figure whose true allegiance and future actions remain unpredictable. This inner conflict invites readers to explore themes of nature versus nurture and whether one's origins dictate one's destiny. Can one completely sever ties with evil, or will it always linger in the shadows, waiting to pounce? I look forward to reading more books in this series and highly recommend this book to anyone interested in suspenseful stories filled with dark family secrets and criminal masterminds.
