In Burn Out by Kristi Helvig, seventeen-year-old Tora lives on planet Earth, but it is on an Earth far different from our own. After the world was saved from a planet-destroying asteroid, the diverted asteroid missed Earth and collided straight into the sun. Now with a super-heated red giant overhead, global warming has kicked into overdrive with the oceans dry, water scarce and sunbathing obsolete. Tora lives underground with her dad's guns. She's one of the few people left on Earth after most of the rich escaped to a new, better planet. But she is not alone for long when a group of bounty hunters come looking the guns her father designed – special, deadly guns capable of taking down a whole planet.

A fast-paced read, Burn Out stars a kick-ass heroine who's no apocawuss. Burn Out was a very enjoyable read. Tora makes for a very compelling, and interesting character. I could have done without the romance though, it felt a bit sudden but I guess Tora couldn't help it. James was quite the hunk. The sci-fi elements were top notch and I could really envision the world that Helvig created. I also loved the irony of averting one disaster only to create a new one. It's like the game you play as kids, Would You Rather. . . just on a more epic and deadly scale. And after that killer of an ending, a sequel had better be on the horizon.
