Jordan Marlowe is an aspiring writer who, while stranded at the airport, purchases a bestseller and discovers that the novel is an original manuscript she abandoned three years ago. Her work has been plagiarized. Or at least she thinks it has. By Any Other Name by Kate Laack follows Jordan’s journey to prove that her work has been stolen by another unknown author, named Beatrice Mitchell. She enlists the help of her partner, Collin, her best friend, Lindsay, Lindsay’s boyfriend, Micah, and her mentor, Valerie, to discover the real Beatrice Mitchell. How was Mitchell able to self-publish, successfully market, and achieve bestseller status without ever going public as the author of the book? What Jordan’s friends discover about Beatrice Mitchell causes her to question the value of traditional forms of creative writing and the publishing world.
Kate Laack highlights her writing talent through strong character development. The protagonist, Jordan Marlowe, is someone we get to know both professionally as a writer struggling to create a new story and personally through her relationship with Lindsay. This character is considerate and thoughtful yet tenacious when it comes to involving her close associates in solving the mystery of the stolen manuscript. By Any Other Name is a fast-paced read, where each chapter ending left me wanting to read more. The plot twists serve the mystery of the stolen manuscript well, and the final twist, when Beatrice Mitchell is finally unmasked. I look forward to reading more from Kate Laack.
