Cam the Courageous Camaro is a children's book written and illustrated by K.A. Mulenga. Cam is a shiny red Camaro and is a very fast car. Cam's family are all racing cars and have won many trophies ... except for Cam. For now, Cam is just happy racing with his family. But soon Cam's dad will retire and wants Cam to take his place in upcoming races. Cam worries because his speed is not as fast as that of his dad's. Cam is told by his father to believe in himself and have courage, but when he races against his brother and sister in the next race, Cam comes third. Cam then races against his entire family and comes last, much to his dismay. Can Cam overtake them all and win the race?
The underlying story by K.A. Mulenga is golden. Cam the Courageous Camaro was known for being extremely fast but lacked the confidence and self-belief that he could win. Many children do not have the strength and courage to believe in themselves without moral support. Seeing how relaxed Cam was with simply having his family there was great, but having them believe in him to be something better - something great - was wonderful. I couldn't help feeling the excitement at the end and also found myself cheering for Cam to win the race. Cam the Courageous Camaro is a self-confidence booster for any young reader, and I recommend it to be stocked in bookshelves far and wide so the next generation of children will believe in themselves enough to truly shine.
