Being a sixth-grader, Yolanda Phillips is at a difficult stage in her life. While facing the changes in her body that happen at this age, she is dealing with other issues such as the divorce of her parents. Follow Yolanda and the rest of her sixth grade friends as they find out about life and the consequences of decisions they make in different situations they face. Are you a sixth-grader facing these same issues in life as Yolanda and the rest of her friends? You might find someone just like you when you read Rolanda McCowan’s book, Can I Just Be Me?

I have read very few books that talk about the issues of sixth grade young girls, and I find this book an amazing read for that age. The book talks about Yolanda Phillips and her sixth grade friends and the situations and issues that they are facing in their lives at this age, both at home and in school. Author Rolanda McCowan does a wonderful job of creating characters and situations for young girls this age to read about. Though these situations are fiction, they are just what girls face today. The neat thing I really like about Can I Just Be Me? is that young girls will understand more when they actually read about others their age going through the same situations, and how they handle them. I highly recommend Can I Just Be Me? to all sixth grade young girls. Every sixth grade class needs this book!
