What if your heart were a cowboy racing through the body on an important mission? In Captain Cardio and the Heart Ranch by Dr. Ally Eruemulor, young readers are taken on a journey through Bodyville. Early on, they meet Captain Cardio, who works tirelessly to keep everyone healthy and strong. He explains how the heart pumps blood, what arteries and veins do, and why oxygen is important. He also rides through different tunnels, delivering energy to the brain all the way down to the toes. Then suddenly, a blob named Plaki crosses his path. Bodyville is put on alert, and Captain Cardio races into action. Will the villain succeed, or will our hero stop him before it’s too late?
After reading the title of Captain Cardio and the Heart Ranch, I just had to read the story. Dr. Ally Eruemulor’s idea to use a Wild West theme has turned what could have been a boring topic for kids into so much fun. As an educator, I think the way the superhero-style quest was used to explain the complicated circulatory system was engaging and easy to understand. In the classroom I work in, we just finished up a unit on the body, and this would have been a wonderful addition to the information the students were given. Classroom discussions about healthy habits, exercise, and what’s inside us could be done after reading. The illustrations by Luis Peres are bright, energetic, and full of motion. Anyone looking for an exciting educational picture book about the heart or a STEM-based adventure will really want to pick this one up. It’s an entertaining and clever story that kids and adults alike will enjoy.
