Rooted in Christ's Identity is a short novella by Sallie Dawkins. All the little sunflower seed has ever known is the Gardener's workbench. It is fond of all the neatly placed pots and plants. The little seed sees that the Gardener likes to tuck a seed in the pot and water it until it grows into a plant. He also loves to talk to the flowers and seeds of His garden. But soon, the sunflower has its world shaken when a bird snatches it up and drops it into the garden bed below. The little seed had never known such darkness. After a while, it cracks from the pressure inside. When the Gardener is silent, the little seed continues to stretch upward until it finally breaks the surface. In the end, there is a beautiful sunflower in the place of the little seed.
To me, Rooted in Christ's Identity: Wholeness Beyond Circumstance is a heartwarming fable. It's an allegory about faith that shows how it helps living beings flourish and develop resilience in the face of adversity. Sallie Dawkins has done a wonderful job of emphasizing the central themes in the narrative. The Gardener and His relationship with the little sunflower seedling have clear parallels to how God views us in the grander scheme of things. Dawkins gently weaves in the message of God's love in the book in a way that should appeal to young and older readers alike. The story is filled with hope. I honestly felt a deeper appreciation for books that have protagonists rediscovering their faith in God. It's a short story, but it definitely leaves an impact on the reader. Highly recommended.
