Rooted in Christ's Identity is a short novella by Sallie Dawkins. All the little sunflower seed has ever known is the Gardener's workbench. It is fond of all the neatly placed pots and plants. The little seed sees that the Gardener likes to tuck a seed in the pot and water it until it grows into a plant. He also loves to talk to the flowers and seeds of His garden. But soon, the sunflower has its world shaken when a bird snatches it up and drops it into the garden bed below. The little seed had never known such darkness. After a while, it cracks from the pressure inside. When the Gardener is silent, the little seed continues to stretch upward until it finally breaks the surface. In the end, there is a beautiful sunflower in the place of the little seed.

To me, Rooted in Christ's Identity: Wholeness Beyond Circumstance is a heartwarming fable. It's an allegory about faith that shows how it helps living beings flourish and develop resilience in the face of adversity. Sallie Dawkins has done a wonderful job of emphasizing the central themes in the narrative. The Gardener and His relationship with the little sunflower seedling have clear parallels to how God views us in the grander scheme of things. Dawkins gently weaves in the message of God's love in the book in a way that should appeal to young and older readers alike. The story is filled with hope. I honestly felt a deeper appreciation for books that have protagonists rediscovering their faith in God. It's a short story, but it definitely leaves an impact on the reader. Highly recommended.

In Sallie Dawkins’ Rooted in Christ’s Identity, a little seed rests safely on the Gardener’s workbench until a bird carries it into the soil below, leaving it frightened and certain it has been misplaced. Buried beneath the earth, the seed begins believing that silence means the Gardener no longer wants it there. While pressure inside the shell slowly forces it open, the Gardener speaks into the darkness and teaches the seed that being hidden does not mean being forgotten. The seed pushes through heavy soil, changing weather, dry seasons, and constant doubt before rising into the garden as a sunflower that finally understands why the painful seasons mattered. When another frightened seed later asks whether it has been abandoned too, the sunflower passes along the same reassurance that carried it through the dark. The story follows one life from fear into trust through the steady care of the Gardener.

Sallie Dawkins’ Rooted in Christ’s Identity is a really wonderful book that is of particular importance right now when so many people measure their worth through subjective markers, like their level of visibility or the speed at which their lives seem to move. Dawkins re-centers identity in God’s recognition instead of performance. This excellent messaging is conveyed in a thoughtful expression of metaphors. The author writes in a simple to understand and welcoming story voice, guiding readers through moments that translate spiritual teaching into daily practice. When the flower turns toward the sun each morning, Dawkins is encouraging habits that keep our attention directed toward God. Readers who are interested in alternative points of view on how to root themselves in faith will love this book, and well as those looking for everyday devotional guidance. Very highly recommended.

Rooted in Christ's Identity: Wholeness Beyond Circumstance by Sallie Dawkins is a well-written book that would serve as a source of hope, healing, and encouragement to readers in the midst of any difficult circumstances or challenges. Sallie begins by sharing the story of a passionate gardener who had a jar of seeds on his workbench. While deep in thought on the workbench, a little seed is suddenly snatched by a bird. Mid-flight, the seed drops onto the soil with a scratch on the side of its shell. The little seed that once knew its edges, shape, and stayed safe now feels afraid, damaged, and longing for the voice of the gardener. However, despite all the challenges and negative voices, it finds the courage to grow into its fullest potential.

Reading this book felt like I was reading one of those powerful parables of Jesus in the Bible. Every chapter held a life-changing, positive lesson that will transform the way readers see themselves when they pray and don’t seem to hear the voice of God. Thinking back on the challenges I have faced in the past, this story offered me comfort in that the scars do not mean that I am damaged, and beautiful things can still come out of me. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter gave me time to meditate. I loved the key scriptures and prayers at the end, as they made this book more engaging. The writing is concise, well-paced, organized, and easy to comprehend. Themes featured include faith, spiritual growth, patience, and more. I recommend Rooted in Christ's Identity by Sallie Dawkins to all Christians and anyone doubting their identity in Christ.
