But if you're looking for something real, stick around, because this is a true story far better than fiction. Lawrence Birnbaum M.D. passionately shares his courtship exploits in pursuit of Candus Houchin, the lady who added more color to his life. This is the central charm of Catching the Incredible Candus. A brilliant study in the infrastructure of courtship and marriage, it is an illustration of one man’s lifetime endeavor to acquire and nurture a woman’s love. It is generously provided with images that attest to the couple’s unfinished love story and one that might require a second book.
Something that might cross your mind upon reading Catching the Incredible Candus is that it appears one-sided. The writing initially gives the impression that Birnbaum is a helpless romantic who makes all the effort in the relationship. Here I take a leap of faith and trust author Lawrence Birnbaum when he discloses that although Candus’s contributions are not fully chronicled, she matches his efforts equally at every turn. If that’s the case, you may ask: why pursue her, to begin with? This is for you to find out, and it is one of many reasons that make this love story so appealing. The central couple has their own share of problematic dispositions, but they manage to maintain an exceptional bond by making their expectations come to terms with their situation. Birnbaum’s thoughts on love run as deep as the Romantic poets. He even writes poems and believes in what they contain. This is a rare true love story that you must read for its realistic examination of compatibility, love, and friendship.
