Cat’s Play by Mollie Hunt is a murder mystery investigated by Lynley Cannon, a cat shelter volunteer for Friends of Felines Cat Shelter. Roderick Payne, an eccentric millionaire, has bequeathed his estate to the shelter under one stipulation. They must find and arrest Mr. Payne's murderer, but the autopsy states he died of natural causes. Lynley moves into the mansion with a list of expected duties while preparing for the estate auction, pet-sitting a clairvoyant cat, and hunting for clues. After a few days, a series of terrifying incidents plague the small group of liquidation specialists, adding merit to suspicious activity surrounding Mr. Payne’s death. A secondary postmortem autopsy confirms that Roderick Payne did not die of natural causes but was the victim of poisoning.
Author Mollie Hunt’s Cat’s Play is a cozy murder mystery that will keep its reader enthralled to the very last page. Every antique trinket has the possibility of being a booby trap in this mystery, which keeps the reader on their toes while anticipating the next disaster. An elusive and eccentric cast of characters fills the pages, adding an entertaining flow during the hunt for clues. I believe the cat, Winter Orange, is the most intriguing character with her humph and purrumph sound effects, making her animal instincts shout hints as to the killer's identity. The twists and turns are non-stop and action-packed. As soon as I thought I knew the killer's identity, I would become blindsided by yet another suspect. This book has all the ingredients for a perfect weekend read, so grab a cup of tea and your favorite blanket and cozy up with a copy to treat yourself to a thrilling mystery.
