Two If By Sea by Alan Boreham, Peter Jinks, and Bob Rossiter is a nautical action thriller set in 2008. Commander Jack Becker of the Office of Naval Intelligence is asked to sail Ironsides, an experimental 70-foot yacht, from Pearl Harbor to Sydney. He sets off hoping for a quiet voyage across the South Pacific, a chance to get away from everything for a while. Then a deadly strain of avian flu breaks out at the Beijing Olympics and spreads around the world almost overnight. Ports close, order collapses, and the only people left untouched are those already at sea. When Jack pulls a woman out of open water, he has no idea who she is or who is looking for her. Soon he’s heading for the Cook Islands, where a small atoll free of the virus is becoming a target. How long can one of the last safe places on Earth stay that way?
Two If By Sea by Alan Boreham, Peter Jinks, and Bob Rossiter is a tense, fast-moving thriller that mixes sea adventure with a pandemic story. The authors switch between Jack’s voyage, the outbreak in Beijing, and the response from scientists in Geneva, and that keeps the pace up while showing how quickly the world falls apart. The sailing and military details are very thorough, from handling the yacht to the weapons on board, and they make the action feel believable. Alan, Peter, and Bob also give the Cook Islands a strong sense of place, with the island community working together as the threat builds. There’s a little romance, but the focus stays on survival. Some scenes are violent and graphic, and there’s mild profanity, so it isn’t for the squeamish. It’s a great pick for readers who enjoy action thrillers, sea adventures, and survival stories.
