“It looks like an upside-down pyramid with tubes, like spaghetti, coming out of the top!” In Abbey Breckling’s Charlie’s Anatomical Adventures, this is how Charlie describes the heart as she sees it. But there’s a lot more for Charlie to learn than how the heart appears in the pictures on the classroom board. After a long day, she still can’t stop thinking about her heart and how it works. As she falls asleep, she is invited by Mr. Red to take a journey inside the heart to see how it works. Her incredible journey through the heart leads Charlie to a keen awareness of how important the heart is, and she wants to learn more: “Our bodies are incredible! The heart is just the beginning – there’s so much more to explore.”
Abbey Breckling’s picture book, Charlie’s Anatomical Adventures: The Heart, is a clever way to teach young readers the many fascinating facts about this vital organ. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along, the plot leads readers through the initial classroom lesson, which sparks Charlie’s interest and curiosity. Her vivid imagination takes her on an adventure through the heart, where she learns so much about how it works and why it’s so important. The illustrations by Melissa Lettis are bright, bold, and colorful and add another dimension to the story. At the end of the book, there is a thorough glossary of terms used in the story, as well as an educational game, the Heart Hunt Challenge, to further young readers' interest in and understanding of the heart. A fascinating and educational read.
