Chronicles of the Nocturnal Forest by Vanessa Kings is a fairy tale that will enchant and captivate young readers. Melanie lives in her own world and is always daydreaming. She feels that no one understands her. One day she meets a fairy who tells her about the history of a family from Astebeth. Every night she dreams of the Kingdom of Astebeth and the magical woods nearby, and the story is a collection of the dreams she has. The fairies and magical adventures will take readers on an enchanting journey along with Melanie. Will Melanie be able to find the purpose of her life?
It's the kind of story that adolescent children will identify with. The dreams and Melanie trying to be accepted by her parents and in school are understandable and relatable themes. The black and white sketches in the book are appealing. The portrayal of the main character, Melanie, is interesting and at the same time intriguing. The book is reminiscent of the classic fairy tales which one read in olden times. All the dreams are thought-provoking, interesting and adventurous, and make it a compelling read.
Fairy-tale stories like this motivate young readers to dream, imagine and become more creative and aesthetic, as it pushes their thinking beyond the fences they create for themselves. The characters are charming and add to the whimsical feel of Melanie's dreams. The book is an easy read and a lot of attention is paid the action and development of the story.
