Author Biography

Born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland where a vast ocean and sky, to say nothing of mighty estuaries, surrounds the land that teems with wildlife and plentiful sea creatures, CA Hines lived on an old farm nestled on the banks of the Choptank River. As a young girl, her best friend was a huge, old apple tree that was so compliant (who doesn't want a friend that always does what you want?) that it instilled a love of the natural order that has carried throughout her life.
The beauty of Talbot County, MD, and her many animal friends, including her pet skunk, was fertile soil indeed. It allowed her imagination to flourish and create a sense of wonder that continues decades later. Such inspiration eventually aroused the desire to share her unique take on life, and she decided to try to write a novel. Cogwheels: Gears in Time is the result.

Cogwheels by CA Hines is part of the Gears in Time series and tells the story of Clarice, whose life changes in mere seconds. While she drives herself and her husband to their new home, a black woman suddenly appears in front of the car. When Clarice hits the brakes, she feels the impact - but there is no body on the road, and her husband had seen nothing as he was asleep. The impact on her body leads to another tragedy. The strange occurrences do not stop, and soon Clarice learns that there are quite a few ghost stories about her new home. When her husband leaves to continue working, she finds out just how true those stories are - and that her own past is connected to the haunting. A past that lies further in the past than she could have ever believed.

Like Clarice, readers only slowly uncover the truth behind the events in Cogwheels by CA Hines. Horses that go mad, heads that roll down stairs, and a beautiful black woman that only a few can see are all ingredients in a mix that kept me entertained for a few hours. Clarice finds an old journal in which she discovers some of the history of her new home, and how it all is connected to herself. She learns more about the black woman, and that there is only one way to put an end to the horrors she has to face. Whether Clarice finds peace in the end is something you have to find out yourself. This book is definitely worth your time if you like horror stories that aren't gory, but still make you want to keep the lights on.
