Crossfire (Life’s A Rodeo Book 1) by Heidi Herman is a delightful love story wrapped up in a message about work/life balance and the pressures of family and legacy. Moirin Garrett has spent her adult life building her skills, her reputation, and her family’s massive energy company’s profile and profitability. She has few relationships beyond her closest girlfriends and her beloved cat, Orson. Every hour of her life is dictated by the constant demands of the business and her need to impress her mother with her corporate skills and to make her father proud of her. She has eschewed the traditional role assigned to women of love, marriage, and children in favor of the relentless climb to the top of her family’s business. Now, just one step away from the coveted CEO position, she faces the perennial middle-aged question: What was it all for? Lonely and lost, she wonders if there is room in her life for a man, for love, and for balance. Can Moirin have it all, or must she sacrifice something to achieve her goals?

Crossfire is a wonderful story, partly because beneath the overarching plot of a woman seeking meaning in her life, there is an intricate thread of underlying subtexts about the role of women in society and the inherent bias favoring men in business and life in general. Heidi Herman has woven a complex and deeply nuanced story beneath this simple romance. I loved Moirin as a lead character. Despite her relentless drive to succeed, there is also a subtle need to actually do better than any man. Despite Moirin’s unrelenting push for success, there was a sense of vulnerability, loss, and loneliness about her, which gave her a truly multifaceted depth, making her real and relatable. I particularly appreciated the self-examination and introspection that circumstances forced upon her at times, and also the bond between her and her girlfriends that allowed her to express herself in ways she could not in public or to her family. This is a charming romance, but it also delves into deeper areas that make the reader think and respond, as all good books should. This is the first in a series, and I look forward to more from this author and these characters. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend it.
