Crow's Nest by Charles Tafoya is the story of 19-year-old Perez, who enlists in the Army after 9/11 and is sent straight to Afghanistan. Actually, this is the story of his squad and their collective experience at a firebase called The Crow's Nest. The base gets its name because it sits higher than the other mountains around it and sticks out like a lookout on one of the old pirate ships. It is a forlorn and savage place in a cruel and inhospitable land. Perez, Mosley, and Kelly arrive at the base together. The base comes under mortar attack as they are being welcomed and briefed by their captain. Within 24 hours they have embarked on their first patrol and witnessed death. It only gets worse.
I served in the Army myself and The Crow's Nest rings true in its portrayal of not only the horror of war but also in its snapshot of America as represented in the microcosm of the United States Army. Mr. Tafoya also does a splendid job of showing how war emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically changes men. The Crow's Nest, though the story is grim, is ultimately a testament to the power of brotherhood to help ease and heal all wounds. I think this is a book that should be read by anyone and everyone has wondered just what is happening to our troops in Afghanistan. Those who have served in the military will appreciate the veracity of Crow's Nest.
