In A Fall for Grace by G.M. Parrillo, Grace Cartino discovers that her husband Hank is having an affair. She leaves their marriage and takes her sons to her family’s shore house, expecting distance to simplify what comes next. Instead, her decision reopens a past connection with Jim Wooley, a recently divorced father with a persistent ex-wife; a return that puts Grace at the center of yet another set of issues. As Grace moves forward with divorce proceedings, her attempts to establish order begin to attract unwanted attention, and the decisions meant to protect her children create unexpected consequences. A hit-and-run accident changes absolutely everything, threatening Grace's strength to hold her family together while the events set in motion refuse to remain contained.
A Fall for Grace by G.M. Parrillo is a wonderful story, and really gets to the heart of how a woman who leaves a toxic relationship behind can still be subjected to being repeatedly re-victimized even when she does everything the right way. The author introduces us to Grace Cartino and shows how much meaning there is in ordinary exchanges and daily living. The spiral is not of her own making, but she must pull out of it, nonetheless. I love the shore house! It's like a living, breathing environment. Parrillo uses it beautifully as a metaphor for life and the relationship between Grace and Jim. It's a common space with real history; a place of comfort, homecoming, and it is amazing. With excellent writing and a genuinely shocking climax, this is a book worth a few afternoons of reading. Recommended.
