Curious Kitty is a children’s book written and illustrated by Yumi Takaoka. Although shy, Kitty is curious about many things. With her sharp claws, she sometimes accidentally causes damage to the furniture inside. If yelled at, Kitty becomes sad. Kitty’s favorite pastimes include eating, playing and sleeping, but after a while, Kitty becomes very bored when trying to be good all of the time. Her imagination sees her as a superhero, a ninja, a trend-setter, an artist or even a chef. Kitty also sees herself as super strong and indestructible, enabling her to perform many daring feats. Sometimes when Kitty plays, she finds herself in trouble that she needs help to get out of – trouble which sometimes leads to her requiring medical help. But Kitty’s ultimate dream is to just be loved.
The illustrations in Curious Kitty are truly outstanding. I would love to shine a spotlight on Yumi Takaoka, who is a child prodigy with amazing artistic talent. Curious Kitty is a wonderful book, highlighting the ups and downs in the life of a curious cat. I enjoyed how the illustrations showed the things going through Kitty’s imagination, with activities she would like to be doing compared to the things she is capable of doing, as well as the carnage that ensues when mistakes in judgement occur. Kitty has a happy home, is fed, sheltered and loved. The emotion on Kitty’s face is beautifully portrayed in each picture, as is her body language. I recommend Curious Kitty to all young readers, and believe this book would be ideally stocked in home, kindergarten, day-care and animal shelter libraries, to be enjoyed at any time.
