Curse me Not by Elizabeth Fisher follows the crime procedure format, but with a paranormal twinge. Elzetta Swan is a bodywasher, a woman who cleanses curses from people’s auras. When her latest case leads her to the captain of the police, she finds more than a mystery, she finds an unexpected romance. Captain Cal McGrath requests her help when his friend, Brenda Duffey, has been experiencing weird bouts of forgetfulness that doctors can’t diagnose. As Elzetta feared, Brenda’s aura is tainted by a major curse, worse than anything she has ever seen before. She noses her way into the captain’s investigation with the determination to get him to see the good in what she does. The further she digs her way into the case, the closer the two become and the more she puts herself in danger.
Elizabeth Fisher delivers a wonderful paranormal romance with a protagonist with sass and independence. Elzetta is brazen, independent, and strong. She has a mind of her own, but she has genuine insecure moments. She doesn’t let anything stop her and she doesn’t pretend to be anything other than who she is. She doesn’t downplay her paranormal abilities, even if it makes others uncomfortable. The characters are realistic and delightful. Her clients range in a variety of class and personalities. Her neighbors, Vittore and Charlie, look out for her and are the kind of friends you’d want to have in your corner. Fisher puts it all out there with each of the characters. I felt for Brenda as she struggles with her curse. I wanted to be there for Cal when he reveals he’s a widower. I wanted to be a part of her group of friends as they played games. Curse me Not has everything: suspense, romance, friendship, betrayal, and heart. It has all the perks of a crime novel mixed with the whimsy of a romance.
