One Nest or Two, written by Karen Brough and illustrated by Hiruni Kariyawasam, depicts divorce for children through the perspectives of birds whose nest was ruined after a large storm. With a storm forcing them to make two nests, their kids have to adjust to the split of the Bird family. From missing what it used to be like to expressing anger, developing uncertainty and self-blame, the young birds react to the situation in different ways. As she listens to the youngsters, Wise Old Bear shows them the virtues of expressing their feelings and worries as well as the healing that comes from asking questions. These conversations help the children understand the changes their parents made as they learn that the love they have for each other endures regardless of circumstances. As they adjust to new routines, they develop methods of coping while appreciating the many constants within their changing world. Further support is included in the back with open-ended questions for kids that help support the change in the family dynamics.

Karen Brough's One Nest or Two is an excellent resource for children adjusting to life after their parents separate. The message will help kids process emotions when they go through a difficult family transition. The gentle pacing focuses on feelings and gradually addresses healing. Brough's warm approach uses a nest as an apt metaphor for a family home. Resilience, the ability to express feelings, and the need to feel reassured and accepted are the main themes. One of the book's strong points is that the author depicts the characters by showing how children express their feelings differently. She focuses on each of the Bird children as they express ways of coping with their feelings. The pictures are lovely and colorful, perfectly illustrating each bird using soft strokes and lines. One Nest or Two is a recommended resource for children as well as for parents and caregivers to read together as they sensitively talk to children about family life transitions like divorce.
