Cyberwood by Benjamin Sonnek is a thrilling YA sci-fi story following Faye Butler, a girl who’s spent her life in her grandmother’s shadow, waiting to become the next technomantress. Only she never expected it to happen quite so soon. A teleportational gate goes wrong, and her grandmother disappears through it, leaving Fay to inherit her role. The network has failed, Cyberwood is behaving strangely, and everything is silent, and only Fay can uncover the truth. She sets off into the forest with Lily, her rival, and an apprentice bound secured around her neck, to learn the secrets of the ecosystem, the Gates, and to uncover the truth behind her grandmother’s disappearance. It’s a dangerous journey, and Fay has no clue what she’s going to find, but she has no choice if order is to be restored to Cyberwood.
Benjamin Sonnek’s Cyberwood was a captivating read, a unique tale that blends fantasy and sci-fi into an adventure like no other. It’s fast-paced and inventive, full of suspense, and not full of impossible technical language, making it an easy read. The characters are especially well-developed, and the enemies-to-friends dynamic provides emotion and depth to the plot. While the story is entertaining, it does mention sexual assault and violence, but carefully and respectfully. The twists and drama keep you entertained all the way through; the characters continue to grow throughout the story, and there’s enough humor to lighten things, making you laugh out loud along the way. The world-building is unique and gives the forest a personality of its own, and the unexpected ending will leave you guessing whether there is going to be a sequel. An original tale that every fan of science fiction and fantasy stories will love.
