Cynthia and the Blue Cat's Last Meow is an engrossing adventure novella by Jeffrey Penn May. The story follows an unnamed twenty-two-year-old narrator as he embarks on a hike into the forest, trying to reach Cynthia's cabin by the blue river. Cynthia is a mysterious woman whose lands are unlike anything the narrator has ever seen. On the way to her cabin, the narrator comes across a sailor who offers him some cryptic advice. After reaching the cabin, the narrator acclimatizes to Cynthia's daily routine, catching fish, swimming in the pools, and writing poetry that feeds the fish. At night, he listens to the sound of songs coming out of the caverns. But the caverns are a nightmare compared to Cynthia's dreamy abode. Added to the mix is a blue cat with its own eccentricities.
Surreal and full of mystery and intrigue, Cynthia and the Blue Cat's Last Meow takes the reader on a wild, fantastical adventure unlike any other. Author Jeffrey Penn May masterfully incorporates magical realism into a captivating narrative that keeps surprising you at every turn. You don't know what's going to happen on the next page. I loved the dreamlike atmosphere that May creates in the narrative, making the reader feel they have been transported to an otherworldly place that only exists in their imagination. The narrator seems like a stand-in for the reader, uncovering the mysteries of Cynthia's lands one layer at a time. It's a book that calls for a reread so you can decipher the deeper meaning of all the extraordinary events that happen. If you enjoy immersing yourself in surreal tales, this will be right up your alley.
