In "Dark Lake" by Louise Gaylord we find Allie, an attorney and certified PI, back in the Adirondacks and this time a murder hits close to home, in fact too close. When she arrives at the retreat where her family goes every year she encounters her aunt dead face down in the lake and her cousin tied up in her room. The more her cousin talks the more it seems like she has been drugged. As Allie starts to investigate, the sheriff calls it a suicide, but Allie can’t and won’t believe that. Now Allie plans to solve this with or without the help of the sheriff. When she accidentally happens upon a meth lab she is deeper in it than she thinks. When she hooks up with Detective Liam Witcher, things start happening. As she starts seeing different ones as suspects she fumbles in her mind about who is ok and who the killer may be. As bodies start to pile up so do the threats. Can she get to the bottom of this?

This is one of those mysteries where it seems everyone could be looked at as a suspect and it is not till the very end that we find who the unexpected killer is. This reminds me more of the cozy mystery genre where there are some of my favorites to read. Allie is a very likeable character but she has this problem of not listening. She goes out on her own and takes a chance. The secondary characters also lend to the plot. I found the book very easy to read and a fast read and very well-written. I think it would be great for an afternoon sit down or an evening read. This is the first that I have read of this author's work, but as I looked her up I see that this looks like to be the 4th book in the Allie Armington Mystery Series. For fans of the cozy mystery or the suspense-filled thriller I would recommend this book.
