Dark World by Mike Waller is the second book of the Echo’s Way series. Echo and partner Ben have escaped from the ruins of her home world and hope to find some peace and rest. That doesn’t happen. Ben is given command of a Fleet Destroyer, but consequently goes missing in action and is presumed dead. At a loss as to what to do, Echo decides to join the fleet. She sets out for the military academy, only to have the passenger liner she’s riding on captured by pirates.
When she escapes from the ship's attackers, she finds herself on a forgotten world, fighting with a small group of rebels against the family controlling the pirates. The planet’s inhabitants have been subjected to cruel conditions for years. Despite all, Echo keeps holding on to the hope that somehow Ben is still alive. With makeshift weapons but solid determination, she knows she must somehow lead the way and help the small band of rebels free the population.
This is the second of the Echo’s Way books that I have had the pleasure to read and review. Dark World takes up where the previous book ended and continues the entertaining and engaging saga of Echo and Ben. Along with the usual protagonists, the author introduces new and interesting characters with their own perils. This series has plotting that is strong but simple enough for old space opera fans like myself to really enjoy. Like his previous book, I truly appreciated Dark World by Mike Waller, a good story without excessive violence, language and sex. The author has succeeded in doing that very well. Well done!
