Four months after Mike and Mia’s only son Eli died in a terrible accident, Mike is struggling to help his wife come to terms with reality. Mia still thinks that Eli is alive and living with them. Mike’s sister, Cammie, persuades him to seek help from psychiatrist Dr. Kristina Roseburg. Mike reluctantly tries to follow the doctor’s advice to help the disillusioned Mia. But terrifying things start to happen when a frightened Mia tells Mike about a sinister black entity in their house, making him question his own sanity.
Darkness Within (The Darkness Series, Book One) by Candis Vargo psychologically plays with your mind. Candis Vargo’s ability to write spine-chilling scenes is splendid, as I couldn’t put the book down until the end. Her aptitude to spin engaging narrative is backed up by a well-developed plot that keeps readers guessing. There were times when I thought I knew what would happen next, only for the story to go in a different direction which I didn’t see coming. This definitely gives the novel something extra that lifted it above typical modern paranormal tales.
I cared for the characters, particularly Mike, even though a part of me detested him for not being a better husband and father prior to the terrible accident. Mia, Eli, as well as other characters such as Father John and Mike’s colleagues, are well fleshed out. Faithful fans of the paranormal genre would absolutely be satisfied with Book One and I look forward to the next installment from this series.
