Gregory Urbach's Dashiell Hammett and the World's Fair Mystery is a deeply captivating, fast-paced historical mystery about a writer's efforts to protect a deadly secret from the Nazis as the threat of World War II intensifies. As a famous mystery writer, Dashiell Hammett is constantly engaged with fans in such promotional activities as giving book readings at the 1939 New York World's Fair. However, the major reason Albert Einstein approached him was because of their shared dislike for the Nazis. Einstein's assignment for Hammett involves ensuring a highly valuable secret letter does not fall into the wrong hands. Hammett's life takes an exciting turn after his encounter with Einstein, from receiving a bloody letter from a dying, wounded man to being seduced by an inquisitive woman and staring death in the face.

Dashiell Hammett and the World's Fair Mystery is a breathtaking trip into the past, including several notable historical figures. You envision what it's like to talk to Albert Einstein, Adolf Hitler, and Eleanor Roosevelt in person. Gregory also ensures intricate details about the late 1930s materialize throughout the story to engender a true sense of living in that era, such as the limited availability of "TV boxes." Hammett is constantly dealing with exciting and frightening situations in the fast-moving plot. Consequently, the story is filled with several thrilling themes, some commonly seen in spy novels and James Bond movies: crowd fights, one-night stands, kidnappings, torture, military technology, and more. I would read another book by Gregory Urbach without hesitation and recommend it to friends since this book is a terrific way to lose track of time and explore history.
