Sal Cosenza’s Manhattan: The Rising War follows Lady Liberty, the first giant brought to life by a Schistian stone beating inside her copper frame. Her awakening ushers Manhattan into an era where skyscrapers walk among the people living inside them, including the civic-minded Empire State Building and the glamorous Chrysler Building. Beyond the island, followers of the destructive spirit Pegmatite make up the TERROR Group, whose armies expand through captured territories while Manhattan continues building its extraordinary society. After a devastating assault alters the city, Empire State Building faces a frightened population as Lady Liberty receives visions of another attack approaching. The TERROR Commander soon announces plans for a far greater invasion, leaving Manhattan’s living skyline to prepare for an enemy determined to claim the island and erase everything its towering giants represent.
Sal Cosenza’s Manhattan: The Rising War is outstanding alternate-history fantasy fiction. This fast-paced epic is loaded with intense scenes, like Pegmatite recruits becoming towering soldiers and Cyclops Bots advancing across the river. That danger complements the fleshing out of Empire State Building, who has selfless loyalty, especially as he pushes the Manhattan Infrastructure Plan during the Depression. I love Chrysler Building, a fearlessly independent Art Deco tower that stays beside Empire State Building when surrender seems certain. It takes these types of giants to meet Cosenza’s diabolical antagonist, the TERROR Commander, the fanatical ruler directing the invasion of Manhattan. The settings become assets, from volcanic cave walls glowing like red veins to desert dunes shifting into evening shadows. Well written and wildly imaginative, epic fantasy readers with an eye for cinematic prose will adore this book.
