Dawnhart: From Crimson Ashes by V. S. Klare is a dark fantasy coming-of-age centered on the war between humanity and the malicious Nerademon. Having witnessed the horrific demonic massacre of their villages, Max and Mia Ironhart refuse to submit to despair. Alongside a fierce, ride-or-die found family who would sooner burn the world down than abandon one another, they join the Novablades. This mercenary unit is the last defense, equipped with steel and trained to wield the life-giving essence of Aether. Together they must learn to master their powers and take the fight to the Nerademon before the creeping darkness consumes their homeland forever.
V. S. Klare creates a wondrous dark fantasy world in Neahaven, where magic called illumancy always comes with a price, while the demons are far more complex than expected. The characters are all charming. Max is unsure of his abilities and constantly underestimates himself despite his friends reassuring him. His sister Mia is confident and a little hot-headed, but she cares deeply about her brother while developing feelings for Theodore. Theodore initially appears arrogant, but he gradually warms to the group and joins them on their adventures. I liked that the Nerademon were not just evil monsters but had intelligence and used clever tactics. The story is not only about the protagonist and his allies’ struggles while trying to stop the demons but also about family and friends. I would recommend Dawnhart: From Crimson Ashes to young adults who like dark fantasy adventures with demons, family-friendly action, and interpersonal relationships.
