Avery Denning is hiking the Pacific Coast Trail, ending back in her former hometown of Lily Rock. She’s renting a room from Stella Rawlins, but when she gets to the house, she finds Stella dead in front of a little wooden library. Town sheriff Janis Jets at first thinks Avery is responsible. But her assistant, Olivia Greer, doesn’t think so and offers to let Avery stay in her spare room. While Janis tells Avery to keep out of it, she can’t help doing some sleuthing of her own. What she discovers is that Stella's murder has something to do with all the little libraries popping up over town, religious pamphlets that are appearing in the books, and a group called the Switchback Syndicate. When another person dies in mysterious circumstances, with Avery finding the body, the plot gets even more complicated. Can Avery clear her name and solve the crimes? And just who is involved in the Switchback Syndicate, and what’s their connection? Read Dead Drop in Lily Rock by Bonnie Hardy to find out.

I’ve recently become a fan of cozy mysteries, and Bonnie Hardy has a knack for telling a great story. In true whodunnit fashion, the killer isn’t revealed until almost the very end, and it’s a wonderful blindside that most readers won’t see coming. There is a host of small-town characters who you’d expect to see, and there’s even a romance or two. No spoilers from me about who’s involved in any of them. I already adore Avery, and I really enjoy the way this book sets up the next series. While Dead Drop in Lily Rock is a spin-off of her best-selling Lily Rock Mystery series, the Avery Denning Mysteries promises to be equally as enjoyable. I’m so glad to have discovered Bonnie Hardy and look forward to the further adventures of Avery Denning.
