Deaf Ghosts Demystify Middle School: True Biz! by Deborah Love follows Molly, a Deaf seventh grader as she grows into her identity, school life, and relationships. At the start of the year, she struggles with her interpreter, Mrs. Heart, and rejects the need for support, believing she can hear like her peers. This leads to a special meeting where Molly realizes the importance of receiving assistance and decides to accept Mrs. Heart’s help. Meanwhile, she is tasked with befriending Priscilla, a socially awkward student. As Molly tries to juggle this new responsibility, she is also caught off-guard by learning of Alec's insecurities over his Deaf identity. Molly grows closer to Alec and his family, particularly his adopted brother Abel, learning the value of support, communication, and understanding in both her academic and personal life.

Deaf Ghosts Demystify Middle School -- True Biz! by Deborah Love is an adorable, heartfelt, and great portrayal of Molly and the general weirdness of middle school life, especially when the school transition is so drastic. This is the second book in the series, preceded by Deaf Ghosts at Eerie Elementary, but reads as a stand-alone. Love’s writing has intelligent, witty, and genuine feelings, and she goes a long way in making Molly's path to self-acceptance whole. I liked the community that comes with Molly's Deaf identity. Love deftly shows us just how universal language, belonging, and feeling supported are to everyone. But this is not just any coming-of-age book, and Molly, Alec, and Abel aren't just any kids. The book's superpower is in its realistic portrayal of Deaf culture and, when paired with a relatable plot, a supernatural twist, and an interesting cast of characters, it makes it for a spectacular read. Very highly recommended.
