Deep Sleepers by Adrian Willis is an espionage/terrorist thriller set in London, England. The story starts with a fatal bullying incident that sets the tone for the events that will follow. We then go to Tom Blake on a stakeout as he watches one of his "sleepers" get taken to an abandoned building where he may be tortured. It is a false alarm but we learn that Tom works for a clandestine unit in the government and that "sleepers" refers to people under a new and very powerful form of hypnosis. The hypnosis is so potent that the sleepers aren't even aware of the tasks that are assigned them, which is to infiltrate and become trusted members of terrorist groups, hate groups, and lunatic fringe political parties that the government thinks it prudent to keep a close eye on.
Adrian Willis has constructed a well thought out and well written novel with realistic characters with believable motives. Sometimes Deep Sleepers seems like the unknown background story for many of today's headlines. The writing is gritty and realistic without the over abundance of drama and unbelievable action that is common in the run of the mill spy or terrorist novel. The protagonist, Tom Blake, is a very sympathetic but pragmatic character who, in his own way, is a kind of "sleeper" himself. He has not been subjected to the new form of hypnosis but he is under very deep cover. The official record says that he died in Afghanistan. I like the hero and the book and I think most espionage fans will like it too.
