Seventeen-year-old Em Fuller is one of the new generation of Dream Travelers with no special abilities. Em is a Defect — one of the unfortunate Dream Travelers not gifted with a psychic power. Desperate to do whatever it takes to earn her gift, she endures painful daily injections, along with commands from her overbearing, loveless father. When a dear friend whom she thought dead returns to Austin Valley, she learns a shocking, unforgivable truth about the society that Em thought was protecting her.

Defects (The Reverians, Book 1) by Sarah Noffke is another dream traveler series for her fans. Having read Noffke’s The Lucidites series, I was eager to discover a new story with different characters from the world of the dream travelers. Personally, I found this spin off as a solid standalone and the plot is slightly better than the ones in The Lucidites. Protagonist Em is emotionally easy to root for. She matures and becomes mentally stronger as the story progresses. The supporting characters are particularly enjoyable. It clearly shows that Noffke gives them sufficient attention. They get a deserved share of the limelight to drive the story forward, along with the main characters.

I truly enjoyed Defects and found myself reading it when I should have been doing other things – this is always a sign of a good book! All in all, Noffke has done an excellent job in maintaining the imaginative and intriguing qualities of the dream travelers’ universe. I look forward to reading more from this series.
