Demon Heart 3: Year of the Witch is a work of fiction in the fantasy, urban, and action sub-genres, and was penned by author David Crane. Written for adult readers, the work does contain the use of explicit language, the presence of sexual situations, and some scenes of graphic violence. The central protagonist of the story is Naoko, a young woman who appears regular on the outside, but is actually employed by the secret organization Katana owing to her demonic heritage. In this final, action-packed book of the trilogy, we see Naoko face terrible dangers near and far as she is put to the ultimate test to restore light before darkness consumes her world.
Author David Crane has crafted a mature but highly exciting urban fantasy novel with plenty of action, adventure, intrigue, and interpersonal drama thrown into the mix. One of the things I sincerely enjoyed about the construction of the novel is Naoko’s personality, which is balanced between some amazing abilities, but also the mental anguish that the pressure of her position causes her. She is relatable but admirable too, and we can root for her through every shocking twist and violent surprise that the plot has to offer. The action scenes are well-paced to deliver a lot of plot and keep the tension rolling, with a great build-up that leads to final battles and a big, satisfying conclusion to a great tale. Overall, Demon Heart 3: Year of the Witch is a recommended read for fans of the existing series, and urban fantasy enthusiasts who enjoy a darker, grittier world.
