Dennis the Snake by David Serra is a cute short story about a rare young Mango Python named Dennis on a remote, uninhabited island. Dennis's grandmother is celebrating her 90th shedding of skin and resting in a burrow when Dennis goes out on his own to explore. He comes across a man who, by his own words, has apparently been stranded for a long time. Dennis observes the man from a nearby bush as he attempts to eat a coconut and build a fire. When a ship comes along, the man excitedly flags it down. This is a highly regrettable, as it turns out to be a pirate ship, which leads to a run-in that neither the man nor Dennis could have anticipated.
David Serra has written a straightforward and simple short story in Dennis the Snake. I enjoyed reading a tale that is told from the perspective of an animal and particularly of a snake, which is not something I have come across very often. Overall, the story offers a nice bit of escape and, as it is intended as a children's book, it is an easy share for parents and children to enjoy reading together. I liked the idea of Dennis having a 90-year-old grandmother and the marking of what we'd consider birthdays by skin shedding, and found the courage Dennis displayed to be just the kind of characteristic that a parent would want in a children's book. This is a clever and creative story that I'd recommend, especially to young children who are fond of exotic creatures.
