Tiny Wild Things by Danielle M. Wong follows Fran, a magazine writer, who is sent to interview the reclusive artist Jonathan Kramer at his remote estate. Once there, she discovers Kramer’s secret: who he is, what that means to her, and the discovery of another woman on the property named Ramona, confined underground on the estate. As Fran digs deeper, she uncovers more disturbing things about Kramer’s family history, including Ramona’s violent nature and Kramer’s controlling efforts to keep Fran from her. Fran’s visit turns from a professional assignment into a dangerous ordeal as she becomes trapped herself on the estate, where manipulations by Kramer and his assistant Laurel are impossible to avoid, matched equally by the potential threat that Ramona may pose.
“I need to figure out why Kramer has a secret passageway in his library. I need to know where the elevator leads. I need to know what lies beneath this house.” Tiny Wild Things by Danielle M. Wong is a fantastic tale with all the psychological suspense we want and expect in a well-written literary thriller. Fran battles unsettling visions, strange phone signals, horrible dreams about beautiful animals, and a mysterious porcelain doll, but it's really how Wong presents her trance-like nightmares that make the story so darn good. In a testament to her skill as a writer, Wong effectively employs a first-person point of view, but because Fran is so totally frazzled, there are some serious questions of trust for readers with regard to her reliability as a narrator. Overall, this is an immersive story and a brilliant read.
