At fifty-two, Calder Brandt, a veteran industrial consultant at Scientific Management (SM) Consulting, was struggling with a lot. He could no longer dismiss the deteriorating condition of his neck, which was a result of his battle with stage four throat cancer over a decade earlier. According to a doctor, it was not going to improve, and there was little he could do about it. But that’s not all. His marriage was slowly falling apart, and his career was not much better. Frustrated with being repeatedly thwarted in his career goals at SM, a direct consequence of corporate machinations and politics, he launches a quest to be elected Partner. However, despite his situation, he is not willing to back down from the usual sidelining this time around. Find out how it all goes down in Destiny and Other Follies by Gregory Venters.

Lovers of literary novels that blend gritty realism with suspense and a splash of drama will find Destiny and Other Follies by Gregory Venters an enthralling read. Ventures hurls readers into the troubled worlds of the cast with reflective prose of profound philosophical depth. The storyline moves at a deliberate pace, allowing room for the cast’s day-to-day activities, which gave me a sharper understanding of their struggles. Switching between Calder’s and his wife Hana’s perspectives, Venters explores and exposes the brutal reality of midlife crisis, strained marriages, and the dark side of the corporate world. Calder shows that the only way to address toxic corporate environments is through confronting their establishments. He also highlights a sad truth about cancer and its treatment. I had no idea that even after remission, some survivors have to deal with the effects of the treatment, which can be life-threatening, in the future.
