This is a fun, sexy book, an original and entertaining take on the paranormal romance which is threatening to deluge us these days. Audra needs a job so that she can pay her way through college. She ends up as a stripper at the Hoochie Coochie Club. If that is not bad enough, it is not long before a mysterious client turns her into a vampire. Now she sleeps all day, has a new Goth look and a need for pigeon blood. Her best friend turns out to be a werewolf, and Audra faces having to fight her and her clan as the ‘bloodsuckers’ face off with the ‘weres’. That’s not the only major confrontation that comes Audra’s way. She has to deal with radical cops who are out to kill all vampires, and eventually her vampire husband turns up again after a long absence and takes against her dopey, harmless, and unfortunately flatulent boyfriend Paul.
This is really a well-written book. It is gritty and modern, with plenty of swearing, but there are soft edges. Tough, feisty Audra truly falls in love with a nice, innocent guy. She is a good person underneath her sometimes coarse veneer. This is not just another vampire book. It works all the better for not taking itself too seriously. However, there is tension, passion, out and out lust and there is a lot of humanity in all these various monsters. There are more books to come in the series, which has got off to a gripping start with this lively novel.
There are some steamy sex scenes, so it is an adult read.
