Young Deegan loved to play on the swings and soar in the playground even though he did not have wings. His classmates did not go near him as they felt his claws were too sharp to join in their games and he was odd and creepy. Deegan came home crying and asked his mother what he should do. His mother consoled him by saying he would soon find a friend who wouldn't be afraid to be close to him. These thoughts of having a friend who would be kind to him and not run away from his side played in Deegan's mind as he went to bed. He hoped his mother's words would come true. The next day as Deegan sat on the grass, watching his friends play, a girl came and introduced herself as Cass, saying she was new in his class. How does Cass help in making his classmates become friendly to Deegan?

Dino Deegan and the Unpleasant Class (Dino Deegan Series Book 1) by Heather E. Robyn is a wonderful story about friendship, inclusion, and acceptance, and how one act of kindness can change everything. Zoe Mellors brings the story and the characters alive with her wonderful illustrations and gives it a good pace and movement. The pictures also make the concept palpable to readers. The rhyming verses and colorful illustrations, along with the Kindness Advice at the end, make it a perfect book for read-aloud and storytelling sessions in classrooms and homes. The characters of Deegan and Cass are adorable, and all the characters in the story are relatable. Many children will be able to relate to what Deegan is going through in their classrooms because of being different from the rest of the class.
