Divine Secrets of the TA-TA Sisterhood by Joanna Chapman is written with a healthy dose of insight, spunk and humor. The author was diagnosed with breast cancer in her forties and, despite the period of initial disbelief, she managed to pull together a network of family and friends to help her through the periods of diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and recovery. The book is divided into sections which is a blessing for the reader. If consumed all at once, it might be a bit too much to digest. Most helpful to those recently diagnosed will be the initial reactions and how to actually develop a support system for the anticipated long haul ahead. The Divine Secrets boxes are surely something both cancer patients and those attempting to support them should read as refreshers. They are based upon personal experience and they come from knowledge, research and gut feelings.

One of the most poignant sections is naturally the moment that the author looks into the mirror and acknowledges that her body and therefore her psyche, will never be the same. But Chapman immediately tells how to endure that realization by reframing negative thinking. Divine Secrets is a book of honest and raw feelings about an issue that yearly affects thousands of women. Anyone reading the book will be in a better position to take the procedures with an additional ounce of courage while their supporters will surely gain wisdom on what NOT to do when attempting to motivate friends and family members. Well written and from the heart.
