How was the microwave invented? Dr. Brainchild and Radar by Cole W. Williams shares a fictional story of how the microwave was accidentally invented. Dr. Brainchild and his dog Radar go to the lab every day to conduct experiments with a magnetron. One day Dr. Brainchild discovered a chocolate in his pocket had melted when he was close to the magnetron. He wondered why and what else the waves would affect. Dr. Brainchild tested eggs and of all things…popcorn. Of course, discovering popcorn's reaction to microwaves leads to another necessity. What would that be? Ah, you’ll laugh when you find out.

Put a bag of popcorn in the microwave as you read Dr. Brainchild and Radar: A Popcorn Discovery by Cole W. Williams. Williams based Dr. Brainchild and Radar on Percy Spencer’s investigations with the magnetron. His work accidentally led to his discovery of what the waves would do to food, thus changing the world. Dr. Brainchild and Radar would make a great addition to school libraries and classrooms. What could be boring information is shared in a funny story line with beautiful illustrations along with the strange personality of Dr. Brainchild and his fun-loving dog. Williams includes factual information about Percy Spencer at the end of the story. This would be a great story to share at the beginning of the year in science classes from grades three to five. I highly recommend Dr. Brainchild and Radar to teachers, parents, budding scientists, and future engineers.
