In the short story Dreams of Marriage by author Debra Benson, the reader is introduced to our protagonist, Leah, the dietitian and weight-loss consultant who dreams of her perfect wedding day. Leah has many ideas and plans for her wedding, including her perfect dress, perfect bridesmaids’ dresses, and of course, the perfect groom. A big piece of her perfect wedding scenario is missing though; even in her dreams, as she can’t picture her father walking her down the aisle. She can’t picture him, because she doesn’t have any idea who her father is. When Leah takes on a new client, the overweight and recently divorced Andrew, she discloses to him her wish of figuring out this family secret and identifying her father in a moment when she needs support. Through prayer and support, Andrew helps her through this difficult time, and their relationship takes a turn from dietitian and client to something else.

Dreams of Marriage is a short, easy read, and one that you’ll be able to get through in a very brief amount of time. The character development of Leah and Andrew, even in this short work, is very good, and you’ll find yourself invested in them and their relationship, as well as hoping that Leah gets her heart’s desire, both to know her father and to have a beautiful wedding and marriage. This book would appeal to any reader looking for a short work with romantic, Christian undertones. I think Debra Benson’s work has real promise, and I will look for more from her in the future!

Short and Sweet...

Dreams of Marriage was a good short story. I purchased the audio book version and listened to it in the car. The narrator's voice was smooth and even. I enjoyed how he made each character's voice different and come to life. I would have to agree with other reviews that the story did seem a little rushed, especially towards the end. I would have really like to see Leah and Andrew's relationship develop more before she fell in love and committed to marriage. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and will look for other books written by this author and narrated by Ronald Ray Strickland.
