Imagine if you could rewind time—would you be able to escape your fate, or would you be destined to repeat it? This idea is explored in Echo, a novel by Kenneth James Allen. The story follows Eli, a brilliant hacker and a bit of a slacker, who enjoys a carefree life with his two close friends. However, Eli is also a dead man walking, as he faces the lethal consequences of his actions when he unwittingly becomes entangled with a criminal mastermind. The turning point arrives with an unanswered phone call that leads Eli to hack into and steal money from a private account. As the story unfolds and time rewinds, Eli realizes he may be a pawn in a dangerous game where both action and inaction have serious consequences.
Echo by Kenneth James Allen is a sophisticated, gruesome, and well-crafted psychological thriller that presents two versions of the same story. The plot revolves around a young hacker who unwittingly becomes involved with a group of super-criminals. The first part of the narrative unfolds in reverse, with each chapter depicting events that occurred earlier. An inflection point occurs when a single decision changes, and then the story begins moving forward. Beneath the apparent themes of good versus evil, Kenneth explores the butterfly effect and the concept of predetermined destiny. The impeccable character development is impressive, especially with Grigory, a suave yet murderous antagonist reminiscent of an anti-James Bond. The pacing is fast and satisfying, and although I'm typically not a fan of stories presented in reverse order, the author deserves high praise for this presentation.
