In Douglas Robinson’s With Deadly Intent, Majken is a centuries-old blood drinker traveling toward New Orleans when a highway collision in rural West Texas leaves her unconscious far from her destination. Physician Benjamin Lambert receives the unidentified patient at an Odessa hospital, where tests identify an extraordinary physiology built for rapid healing. In New Orleans, college student Thomas is learning to survive after Majken’s blood transformed him, with her longtime friend Stefan teaching him how to feed safely among humans. Majken had planned to join Thomas after leaving a child with her mother in Van Nuys, but she never reaches New Orleans or contacts Stefan. Meanwhile, John, a scarred killer, wants his revenge on Majken after she used her influence to curb his killings. He takes his hunt south, placing Thomas and Stefan directly in the path of a man determined to find her.
Douglas Robinson’s With Deadly Intent is an incredible urban vampyric fantasy thriller, with a supernatural world as ambitious as it is imaginative. Thomas is a conflicted lead who is still able to retain his compassion and desire to protect the people he cares about, like Moses, a blind zoo attendant, once it's clear he could be in danger. Robinson's world-building within the spaces we recognize is first-rate, and much of it comes through familiar institutions serving the hidden community, such as Audubon Zoo’s veterinary hospital that collects animal blood for its blood-drinking staff. The visual prose describes the landscapes and is the greatest testament to his skill as a writer, from Bourbon Street under antique lamps glowing through fog, to the Port of New Orleans, where crane shadows cross the wharf beneath the last red light of sunset. This is perfect for readers who enjoy supernatural thrillers hidden inside the cities we've never seen through Robinson's lens. Very highly recommended.
